FVL Piano/Organ Lessons 21-22

Season:
Fall 2021

Fox Valley Lutheran High School

Piano & Organ Studio Policies 2021-2022

Mrs. Hope Loescher, MCM

Thank you for your interest in the piano/organ program at Fox Valley Lutheran! Keyboard lessons can be a blessing in so many ways: they develop mind and muscle coordination that transfers to all daily activities and sports, they support the full use of both sides of the brain, improving cognition that transfers to academic achievement and better test scores. Confidence, concentration, discipline, patience, determination, and perseverance are all developed through the learning of this life-long skill. It is my prayer and intention to share not only passion for music with my students, but also a passion for using their gifts to the glory of God!

Scheduling

  • Each student is scheduled for twelve 25-minute lessons per semester.

  • Lessons are scheduled during a study hall, or before or after school. (Please note: lesson time slots will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis.)

  • Lessons are currently offered Mondays and Tuesdays.

  • Second semester lessons will begin the week of January 17.

  • Students register and pay for one semester at a time. The cost is $17 per lesson.

  • Registration & fees are facilitated by the FVL business office.

Expectations

  • Regular intentional practice is essential for improvement and progress. 30 to 45 minutes, 6 days a week is a general guideline. Increased practice typically brings better results.

  • Students are expected to arrive at the teachers' office a few minutes before their scheduled lesson slot, so that they do not miss any of their reserved time.

  • Students should remember to bring their books and materials to every lesson. In the event that books are forgotten, we will still have a lesson but will work on other skills such as sight reading, note identification, and theory.

Books & Materials

  • Please bring these materials to every lesson:

    • a small binder with loose leaf paper or a notebook

    • a pencil

  • Intermediate to advanced students should also bring a hymnal if they have one (either Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal or the new WELS hymnal).

  • There is also a required book for all piano students who are playing at an intermediate to advanced level: All-In-One Piano Scales, Chords, and Arpeggios for All Piano Methods by Karen Harrington ($6.99 on Amazon).

  • Organ students must provide their own organ shoes.

  • Due to copyright laws, music will need to be purchased for each student to play. There are three options for music purchase so that families can choose the method that works best for them. Upon registering for lessons, you will be asked to select one option for the semester:

    • Option 1: "Do it Yourself" - The teacher will give music recommendations as needed throughout the year. Families purchase the music on their own.

      • Benefit: This gives families the flexibility to search for good deals online or at a music store such as Heid music in Appleton.

    • Option 2: "Teacher-Handled" - For a nonrefundable fee of $45 per semester, the teacher will purchase all music for the student as needed throughout the year. The student will keep the music for their own collection.

      • Benefit: This option saves families time - they do not have to worry about finding music and getting it to the student on time for lessons, and the student still keeps the music.

    • Option 3: "Music Rental" - For a nonrefundable fee of $5 per month ($20 per semester), the teacher will provide all needed music for the student. At the end of the semester, the student will return the music to the teacher.

      • Benefit: This is the most cost-effective route. The downside is that the student will not be able to keep the music they have learned.

Performance Opportunities

  • FVL Musicfest (February) - This is a more "casual" performance in which all students are strongly encouraged to participate.

  • WSMA Solo & Ensemble (winter/spring) - This formal performance is done before a small audience and a judge.

  • FVL Chapel - Throughout the year, intermediate and advanced level students will have the opportunity to play hymns for chapel services.

  • Church - Students are encouraged to reach out to their home congregations to play preservice for church, or an entire service if they are able!

Makeup Policy

  • Lessons missed due to a students' illness, school-related activities, snow days, or the teacherÃ???Ã??Ã?¢??s absence will be made up.

  • Lessons missed due to a students' pre-planned absence (such as a family vacation) may be made up if the absence has been communicated to the teacher in advance. Please contact the teacher no later than the day before to excuse the absence.

  • Lessons missed due to an unexcused absence will not be made up.

  • Makeup lessons can normally be scheduled during designated makeup weeks, or they can be made up at the end of the semester. In special circumstances, they may be made up during the week of the missed lesson.

  • It is the responsibility of the student to communicate with the teacher regarding scheduling makeup lessons.

  • No more than 4 makeup lessons will be given in a semester.

Refund Policy

  • If a student tries the first lesson or two and decides not to continue, a refund (minus the cost of the first one or two piano lessons taken) will be granted.

  • After three piano lessons, a 50% refund will be granted.

  • After four piano lessons, no refund will be given.

  • Book-related fees and missed lessons are non-refundable.

Communication

  • As needed, I will normally contact parents and students via email and/or phone.

  • I request to have students' phone numbers in order to text lesson reminders. If you are not comfortable with this, please let me know and I will not include your student.

  • Please reach out to me with any questions!
